We are making plans for spring right now!

This is a hillside planting installed by our landscape crew.  We at Ferda's Garden Center now offer complete landscape design and installation services. Our resident landscape designer, Dawn Gower, works year round with our clients so they can plan and realize the dreams and goals they have for their outdoor spaces.  With her insight and guidance, even the most monumental goal seems attainable! Dawn leads our expert team of landscapers so you can sit back and enjoy the beauty of your dream come true.

It's time to design!  Winter is an ideal time to plan for spring and make a drawing of what you would like to see in your yard.

We're proud that in only our 2nd year of doing landscape installations we were chosen Best of the Ohio Valley for landscape and lawn care in the Times Leader 2007 contest.

We will also continue to offer our "We Plan/You Plant" landscape design service. The We Plan/You Plant service has proven to be very popular. This is how it works: One of our landscape designers comes to your house, talks with you about your vision for an area, and gives you a simple, easy-to-follow plan that you can use for your outdoor landscape projects. The cost? You pay $100 for the consultation. We then give you a certificate for $50 off your purchase of $200 or more of landscape shrubs from Ferda's. So the cost to you becomes just $50! This is a great opportunity to have some professional help right at your house!

Shrubs

Shrubs are what make up a large part of our foundation plantings around our home, creating walls in outdoor rooms, screening neighbors or service areas of the home, lending protection to our bird friends in winter and butterflies in summer. The 30+ year old landscapes in this area are looking ready for a change as folks are tiring of the deer munched yews that are rigidly defending the foundations of their homes! Well, here are some other ideas we have arriving in the spring!

This is Nandina Domestica, or 'Heavenly Bamboo'. It is a shrub variety, non-spreading bamboo that has a wonderful new growth color in spring with clusters of lightly fragrant white flowers. The flowers turn to a coral colored berry in the late summer and endure through the winter. The fall foliage is also a coppery color. This shrub should be left to it's natural, graceful, free-form shape except for very light pruning. This plant has low water needs and low maintenance needs and is adaptable to various types of soil conditions. It prefers a soil lighter in organic content so is fairly comfortable in our clay soil...lightly ammended with a peat moss. As is true to nature with Japanese style material, the leaves are very delicate, not heavy, and make for an easy fall clean up. This shrub can be used as an interesting addition in a foundation planting, an accent plant around a pond or a pondless waterfall or even as a specimen in a border planting. Deer Resistant and hardy to Zone 5 protected. For more information on pondless waterfalls and other landscape design ideas, Click here

Trees

This is a picture of a young Kwanzan Cherry tree in full bloom in the spring. We have available to us a large selection of trees in many different sizes. It is important to note, that using some of our native tree selections would be easier for us to incorporate into our landscapes because they are accustomed to our soil and weather conditions, and will be replacing material that has been depleted due to building and mining. Consider investing in a larger scale tree, as well. This will help you to be able to see this tree in an adult form faster than you would a tiny tree. The larger the tree, the more roots it has and the less traumatic it is for the tree to be transplanted. Sometimes when we look at the little one gallon containers we can't really judge good planting distances and growth patterns which can hurt both us and the trees in the long run. With regard to natives, think also about sustainablility. Sustainable plantings can begin small and at our individual homes. I know it's a buzz word right now, but it would truly help the native birds, butterflies, insects and yes, even the deer to be less destructive in your landscape. So what do you think of when you think of native trees? Here are some pictures of something other than the Sycamores and Maples we see so many of.
